Wanna come to the 2017 Harmonica Retreat in Hawaii?

JP Allen

I’m so stoked! I will be having an intimate harmonica retreat at my home in Kauai.  I’m limiting it to only 5 beginning and intermediate-level harmonica students, because I want to have more time and energy to get to know you and personally help you with your biggest harmonica challenges.

My past events have generally been much larger than this one and have sold out quickly, so if you’re interested in coming, I recommend you contact us ASAP to hold a spot … and then you can take some time to think about it.

DATE CHANGE UPDATE: This 5-day retreat starts February 27 and ends March 3rd, 2017.

Simply email Jessica at retreat@harmonica.com (or call her cell phone at 808-631-9353). She will reserve you a spot for five days with no deposit or obligation necessary.

KAUAI WIDE VIEW

What Is a Hawaiian Harmonica Retreat?

Hawaiian Harmonica Retreat

It’s a musical harmonica vacation that you will remember for the rest of your life … a time for resting, relaxing, basking in the beauty of Hawaii and … getting a whole lot better at the harmonica!

It’s an awesome opportunity for me to give you personalized one-on-one lessons. If you’ve been having a challenging time learning to bend, play blues, or make your favorite songs sound good, I’m optimistic I will be able to help you.

It’s an opportunity to experience Kauai, the Hawaiian Island that some consider one of the most beautiful places on earth (and have a dang good time with me and four other harmonica friends from around the world).

I’d love to share a bit of my life in Kauai with you and send you home with some great memories … and a newfound confidence and enthusiasm for the this awesome little instrument.

Hawaiian Harmonica Retreat

Ready to Upgrade Your Blues Mojo?

During the retreat I’m going to focus on how to help you sound bluesy by using some simple techniques that aren’t too hard to do. And if you don’t already know how to bend, I won’t let you leave Hawaii until you can hit at least one if not all the bluesy draw bends  🙂 I also want to show you how to make the harmonica sound sweet and beautiful. We’ll use the folk styles of Bob Dylan and Neil Young to accomplish this, but you can use the techniques you learn over any style of music.

What Are the Drawbacks of a Small Retreat?

Because I’ll be the only teacher for this retreat, you won’t get the benefit of learning from other awesome harmonica teachers. My last retreat in 2015 was a huge success, with 23 students from four continents, and four total teachers. That said, I felt a bit bummed because I wasn’t able to give people as much personal attention as I would have liked. So I decided to go back to my roots to create a super simple and stress-free event. (I’m not currently making any plans for another large retreat, but I probably will at some point).

What Are the Benefits of This Intimate 5-Student Retreat?

Well … the obvious one is that I will be able to give you and your fellow students more personalized attention. My very first harmonica retreat years ago had only 7 students and I was the only teacher. It was laid back, and I enjoyed getting to help every student with their specific harmonica challenges and dreams. Because this retreat is limited to only 5 students, even the group lessons will feel “semi-private,” as I will be consistently tailoring the lessons to address your specific goals and challenges with harmonica.

Hawaiian Harmonica Retreat

Wanna Join Me for My 1st Official Harmonica Housewarming Party!?

The retreat will take place in the living room of my humble new home. I’m calling the retreat a housewarming party because my wife, dogs, and I never actually had an official celebration … so this is it!!!!!

KApaa Bike Path

My home is centrally located in the town of Kapa’a, only 18 minutes from the airport. Many consider Kapa’a the cultural center of Kauai, because of its restaurants, locally owned artisan shops, and wonderful parks on the ocean. My home is only three blocks from the beach, near a bike path that runs along the ocean. So if you chose to stay in Kapa’a town, you could easily walk or bike along the ocean to my home. And you’ll also have easy access to tons of great restaurants.

How Good at Harmonica Do You Have to Be to Attend This Retreat?

The retreat will be tailored to beginners and intermediate harmonica players. I recommend you complete a minimum of 50% of my Happy Harpin’ video lessons prior to coming. We will work on basic blues and bending techniques quite a bit, so I can promise you that you’ll jump a level in these areas before leaving.

I’m excited to help you learn to jam with other musicians, play solo-style harmonica, develop your lead harmonica skills, master some of your favorite songs, and develop your ability to play by ear. If you’ve got specific techniques or interests you want help with (like harmonica amplification, overblowing, music theory, etc.), we can cover these in your private lessons if we don’t cover them in class.

If you consider yourself an advanced harmonica player, this retreat may not be right for you. Although, I have had advanced students come to my past beginning/intermediate level retreats and leave quite happy with what they learned. They also seemed to get a lot of satisfaction out of helping the beginning and intermediate level students. If you’re the type of person who enjoys helping others and you’re feeling called to come, you can email me at retreat@harmonica.com and we can talk about the possibility of your attending this retreat.

If you want me to send you home with a clear, custom-designed training program to inspire you for months to come, just let me know. It would be my pleasure.

Check Out What Some Past Retreat Students Had to Say:

“I learned everything I wanted to learn and more.”
“JP, you changed my life more than you know.”
“I loved jamming together.”
“Experience of a lifetime.”

When Is this 5-Day Harmonica Retreat?

RETREAT BEGINS:  Monday February 27, 2017 at 10:30 a.m.

RETREAT ENDS:   Friday March 3rd, 2017 at 9:00 p.m.

Humpback 1

One of the reasons I am hosting the retreat in late February is so you can have a warm getaway from cold northern climates. In addition, plane and hotel fares tend to drop significantly at this time of year. I live in a relatively dry and sunny location at sea level (so it tends not to be too rainy or hot).

How Will Your Days Be Structured?

The group lessons start at 2 p.m. and end at 5 p.m. For all five days of the retreat you will receive three 50-minute beginning- to intermediate-level group harmonica lessons. In addition, you will receive one 40-minute private harmonica lesson from me every other day (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday), some time between 10:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.

On Tuesday and Thursday, you won’t start class until 2:00 p.m. This means you’ll actually have plenty of free time to relax and check out this gorgeous island. If you’re looking for an experience where you play harmonica all day every day, this is probably not the right event for you. That said, if you’re stoked to spend a good portion of your day playing harmonica and also having lots of free time to do stuff like … going to the beach, taking a hike, seeing the sights, getting a massage, going out to dinner, checking out local music and entertainment … you’re likely to have a wonderful time.

Waimea-Canyon-State-Park.rend.tccom.966.544

Kauai is truly spectacular. Its massive white-sand beaches, canyons, waterfalls, and lush tropical mountains will blow your mind. You can find out more about Kauai here: www.gohawaii.com/kauai

If you’re bringing a guest, you’ll have ample time to hang out and share the experience of being in Kauai with them.

Kalalau

Each morning you’ll be free until your private or group lesson begins, and you’ll also be free on three evenings after 5 p.m. to do whatever you want. And yes! Your guest(s) are definitely welcomed to come for free to the Thursday evening house concert. In addition, I would love for them to join us for dinner at the final Friday evening group performance and celebration (dinner is complimentary for retreat participants only). If you’re coming alone and you actually would like to play harmonica all day every day, just let me know in advance and I will give you a rigorous practice routine you can stick to during your free time.

Food & Accommodations Not Provided

Meals and accommodations will not be provided, but there are many fantastic hotels and restaurants within walking distance (or a short drive) from my home.

CORAL REEF HOTEL

I have made arrangements for you to get a special discount at the Coral Reef Hotel, a really nice beachfront property, ranging from $89 to $149 per night. It’s a 0.6 mile walk along the oceanfront bike path to my house. To check out the Coral Reef, visit www.hotelcoralreefresort.com. (You will need to arrange your own rental car or $30 taxi ride to get there.)

What Happens When You Sign Up?

Once you have registered, our retreat coordinator Jessica will give you speedy email responses to any logistical questions you might have. You can email her anytime at retreat@harmonica.com (or call her cell phone at 808-631-9353).

Refund Policy

After paying your tuition, you will have a full seven days to request a 100% refund for any reason. If you choose to cancel after this seven-day period, we will also refund you in full, provided we find another student to take your spot. In addition, if you have a last-minute emergency, you can apply your tuition to a future harmonica retreat.

hawaii-whale-tail

100% Satisfaction Guarantee

As with all of Harmonica.com’s offerings, you get a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If, on the final day of the event, you do not feel this retreat has prepared you to take your harmonica playing to the next level (and given you wonderful memories that will last a lifetime), you can request a refund and get your money back (this has never happened but I wanted you to have the reassurance that you’re going to have an awesome experience). You will need to attend a minimum of 80% of your classes to exercise this option.

Wanna Play on Stage with Me?

On the final evening of the retreat we’re all going to perform together live, as one big harmonica band. Then I will treat you to dinner at one of my favorite fancy ocean-view restaurants.

Of course, if you don’t want to perform you don’t have to. You can also request a minor role in the performance (you can think about this … no pressure … it’s totally optional).

What Does It Cost? And What Are the Options?

OPTION A: The Exclusive Hawaiian Retreat Package
This option includes all of the following:

  • 40-MINUTE PRIVATE LESSON EVERY OTHER DAY: During the retreat, you’ll get a total of three 40-minute one-on-one lessons with me (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday).
  • THREE INTIMATE GROUP LESSONS EVERY DAY: You’ll also receive three 50-minute group sessions everyday with me and the four other students. Some of the classes may held at a gorgeous spot near the beach that is only 3 blocks walking distance from my house (weather permitting).
  • ONE HIGH-END “JP-CUSTOMIZED” HARMONICA: You will also get a high-end harmonica (a Hohner Crossover or equivalent) in the key of your choice, which I will personally customize with reed gapping. If you’re having trouble with your bends, you’ll be amazed how this harmonica will help you play the blues like butter. (Don’t worry, I won’t let you leave Hawaii until you can bend.)   🙂
  • A PRIVATE IN-HOUSE CONCERT WITH LOCAL HAWAIIAN STYLE PERFORMER: On the fourth evening of the event (Thursday), you’ll be invited to a private in-house performance with one of Kauai’s best and brightest musicians. You’ll be welcomed to jam along if you want. You can also prepare a song ahead of time and do a quick rehearsal before the gig.
  • THE FINAL EVENING’S DINNER CELEBRATION:  I’ll treat you to a fancy dinner at one of my favorite oceanside restaurants before our final evening’s live performance and celebration.
  • AND FOR GOOD MEASURE: You’ll get both of my original music CDs, personally autographed to you.

OPTION B: Mojo Coaching Upgrade!
This option includes everything in Option A above, plus:

  • TWO SESSIONS OF MY MOJO COACHING. What’s that?
    • Session 1 will happen within the next two weeks and will help you get the most out of your time with me at the retreat: After an initial 15-minute private phone interview, I will make you a personalized instructional video (ranging from 30 to 45 minutes in length). The video will address your specific harmonica challenges and personal goals and show you exactly how to practice to get the most out of your time with me at the retreat. Your video will include personalized instruction as well as play-along lessons that you can use as part of a regular practice routine. This means you’re going to have a lot of fun playing and practicing with me (via video) in the comfort of your own home, even before we meet each other in person.
    • Session 2 will be a follow-up after the retreat: After the retreat is over, you will get a follow-up personalized instructional video lesson (also 30 to 45 minutes in length), to make sure you’re staying on track with your goals and dreams for harmonica.

    aloha JP,

I’d love to take you up on this fabulous offer. Having lived in the Islands for many years, I now live in Las Vegas, and it’s a great change, as you can imagine. I’m only writing to let you know that I am in the process of getting your home course, and soon, will be jamming along with the rest of your students.
From what I have experienced with your giveaway lessons, I love them and have learned a whole lot. Your style is very easy to grasp, and that’s a great thing, having tried to take lessons from others who were great players, but not teachers.
I didn’t know that such a thing was possible, now I know it is. So good luck on all you do, and looking forward to going back to my beloved Hawaii Nei. aloha pumehana, Arthur Hakalani Pacheco

    Aloha JP!

I took my Dad to the Veteran’s Hospital (Tripler) here on Oahu the other day for an overnight stay. When he was sleeping I found a quiet spot (away from the patients) and was playing my Harp. The next day a staff member asked me if that was me playing the Harmonica the “yesterday” and I said that it was. He said that he had to stop and listen and taht he’d “never heard anyone play the Harmonica like that before!” He made my day. THANK YOU!!!!

I recently had a family member in the hospital, and I very softly played my harmonica in his room when it seemed right. It helped me, anyway.

Best wishes with the retreat and as a thought, no comparison but maybe you can come up Seattle way and do a harmonica retreat for us here!

I know this sounds really stupid but I was actually handed a free harmonica with a bottle of whisky purchased recently. Made me think it was about time I actually put some time into learning to play something. I have a lot of friends who enjoy various instruments but never seriously looked at doing the same myself.
Several lessons in, and a usable harmonica in the mail. I really enjoy your style of teaching and absolutely agree that having fun along the way is the key to motivation.

Aloha JP! People tell me the hardest thing about learning to play harps is to breath when they play, bend notes and how to play single notes. I tell them that you teach all this stuff and MORE and reccomend you all the time. I tell them just because someone is a good player does not mean they are a good teacher, but in your case, you are both. I love playing Harmonica and Guitar. I also sing and write my own songs. Now I wanna tackle the recorder or flute!!! THANKS AGAIN for the great lessons!

YES, I put my deposit on the retreat! My spot is cinched! It will be a huge surprise to my wife to go to Hawaii for our 35th wedding anniversary! I have just completed the cd lessons, now i am doing the blues cd set, I am loving it!! OK, I feel a little funny, it’s really a selfish gift since I’m the player, not her! But I am sure she will have plenty To do in Hawaii while I am in lessons! I AM SO EXCITED TO LEAVE IOWA! Really, this is only the second time her and I have left the country for a vacation. Puerto Rico is very nice, but no harmonicas! Just Rum! Not a total loss! This is going to be a life changing event for us, Thank you JP!

Dear JP, I play everyday on the way to visit my mother at the rest home, since I started your lessons a few months ago. Your invitation brought tears to my eyes of a future dream that some day I could have the honor to play with you and others. I only went on line to find out about a missing page in my mothers old harmonica book and I ran into your lessons. It’s made my life so much more fun. Thank you and Stephenie for the great lessons. I’m glad to hear Hal is doing well. Have a great Retreat! I’ll be looking forward to meeting you when I finally get there, till then, I’m Saving and Dreaming and Playing.

Hi JP, Life has been hectic lately and I just keep trying to get it all done. Thankfully, I keep my harmonica tucked in hand,to cheer me up. I have been practicing Happy Birthday, to play at the Rest Home. I hope to hear from you soon. I’m missing your e-mails. I hope all is well with you. RG

JP, learning the harmonica is on my bucket list. I started your online classes one month ago and just wanted to tell you what a great instructor you are. Your lessons are explained very well and I have been having so much fun. I am up to lesson 36 so far and can hardly wait to see what’s coming up next. I am hoping by the time I get to the end you will have more lessons available. Thank you so much for making these online lessons. you have proven that you can teach an old dog new tricks! Haven’t had this much fun in a long time. Ann

When I saw the view from your house in the videos, I thought either the Big Island or Kauai. Now I know it’s Kauai. You live on one nice island…brah!

Lived in Ewa Beach for quite a few years. First as a Sailor, then as a Honolulu police officer. The Na Pali Coast is one of my favorite parts of Hawaii. If you can go, don’t miss it!

Unfortunately, I can’t get to your course, but just couldn’t resist telling folks that the north shore of Kauai is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful places on earth. If I moved back to Alohaland, that would be on my short list of places to live.

By the way, one of my biggest regrets in life is not learning a musical instrument. I’m making up for it now! Right now, I’m learning harmonica, tin whistle, and bones (being Irish, I’m a BIG traiditional Irish music fan!) So far, I’m enjoying your course very much. Thanks lots, JP!
