Harmonica experts would say that the more you use your harmonica the shorter its lifespan would be. It’s probably because of the reeds’ distortion. Well, whatever the reason, an individual blues harp is unlikely to last a lifetime. So, how can we say that harmonica is a lifelong instrument?
Answer: It’s actually the harmonica experience that is lifelong, at least for the really serious player. The drive to perform, maybe to entertain or just to show off the skills on their harmonica, also compels them to enhance their ability by constant, regular practice. Beginners who aspire to be one of the masters of the blues harp make the harmonica their daily companion and practice buddy, maybe for life.
The joy of being able to blow away an audience with an enticing musical performance would motivate any musician to bring out their best and continue to improve. This is absolutely true with a blues harpist; well, perhaps not with a beginner, but definitely with a seasoned, serious player. But how can somebody who got acquainted with blowing and drawing notes from a harmonica not get hooked on it? This simple, ten-holed “tin can”, tongue-twister that can produce soothing, soulful music is addictive. It’s a good therapy for boredom, and you can take it anywhere anytime since it could fit in your pocket or purse.
Speaking of therapy, playing harmonica has been shown to be a very effective way of implementing fun and healthy programs and activities for helping with respiratory conditions. In May of 2004 David Barrett, a volunteer at California’s El Camino Hospital, set up a harmonica program for people with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and related airway diseases.
Findings from this helped David (and co-author Dennis Bucko M.D.) complete their harmonica book/CD Harmonica For Fun & Health. Although not scientifically recognized as a cure, the authors provide anecdotal evidence claiming people with pulmonary diseases such as emphysema, chronic bronchitis and chronic asthma have told success stories about harmonica programs they went through and the benefits they gained from them.
What’s more, there’s also a potential psychological benefit. Whenever we’re bored or out of focus we playing harmonica can transform our mood.
Making this pocket pal our constant companion will certainly give us more time to delve into music and potentially benefit our health. Music and health, enough reasons to make the harmonica our lifelong instrument, and an experience that should last a lifetime.
