  Hey JP, I’ the 82 yr old guy with the full uppers and lower partial. I’m still having trouble bending all the way. I know it’s me. If anyone can help me, it’s you.. Your Lessons are GREAT and easy to understand. I think my uppers have narrowed the proper wind tunnel to bend properly. Does that make sense to you??   I’m not a big fan of tremolo harps so I’m not the best to ask. I prefer the Hohner Special 20, the Suzuki Harp Master, or the Suzuki Manji (The Manji is Suzuki’s top of the line harp and it’s worth every penny if you’ve got the spare change). (My adorable nephew is half Filipino, loves to jam)

  This was a great video lesson. I’m learning from you each day and everytime you send me these.
  JP I need some advice and I know you’re the man with the answer. I only own a Koch “C” Chromatic. I’ve had it since I was a young child and it’s over 50 yrs old I’m sure. I’m not sure of the quality of the instrument but I know the model is a 980/40 Mon “C”. They were manufactured in the early 1900s by Koch and then Hohner bought them out. My piece was manufactured in Germany. I know from this video that you don’t recommend it for playing songs like Silent Night. I’m now 68 on S/S disability and have saved to buy either your Hohner 20 H560 or the The Blues set of 7 which would give me seven different keys. A,Bb,C,D, E, F,&G. What would be your recommendation. Should I buy the Hohner 20 in “C” or go with the set of 7. I haven’t checked to see if you have any special pricing or discounts for Xmas yet or for Senior citizens just beginning, so please let me know. Thanks for your time and consideration in this matter.

  Hey Terry!

  I too am a student of JP’S and he is THE BEST teacher bar none. I own a lot of Harps, my favorite being the Special 20. However, I also have a Koch Chromatic in C and found that once I get used to the spacing between holes, it’s easy to play and bend notes etc. (don’t use the sharps / flats or “semi-tones” myself) Just relax your ambrachure a bit and don’t tilt the Chromatic in your mouth as sharply as a Diatonic Harp, and you’ll find it works well too!

  Hey JP,

  I’m 16 years old and played trumpet for three years before getting braces. I love your lessons, but I’m having trouble with hitting the high notes on my harmonica. I’m playing on a $10 1931 Blues Harp (it’s not really from 1931) in the key of C, but every time I hit the high notes above 6, I get this dog-whistle frequency that I can barely hear. Every note below 3 also sounds odd, and I can’t figure out if it is me or my harmonica, and the internet doesn’t seem to have any answers. Sorry if there isn’t much information here, but I don’t have this problem on a $3 toy harmonica I had in my closet. Help?

  I’m a student of JP’s also, and like everyone else, I believe his methodology / attitude / product to be THE best. I’ve noted that many have a problem with learning to bend notes. I’m one of the lucky ones who got it right away from JP’s lessons, but of course, I struggle with other things so I’m not bragging. But I have told others that in order to bend a single note, practice playing the single note first. Once you can play the single note easily, it’s like sucking on a straw. It’s not hard at all. How far you bend the note depends on how hard you suck on the straw. Don’t get frustrated and suck too hard and overbend, as you will damage your reeds. Try it! It works! Let me know! :O)

  How is it going? Hope all is well with you and yours. Song I’m working on now is “Down in the valley.” Not a hard tune, but very mournful. Last song I nailed was “Moon River.”

  Taking care of my elderly Dad and working full time takes a lot of my time, but I always carry a Harp with me. Either my trusty Special 20 in C, a Marine Band in C or my Koch Chromatic in C.

  You wanna know the absolute truth? I have all of JP’S lessons, having bought one of his Christmas bundles. But… Although I’ve watched much of it, I have not taken all the lessons from the videos yet. I’ve taken the free lessons he gives us on the website. The first thing I learned from JP is: deep relaxed mouth embouchure, how to blow / draw a single note,how to bend a note and how to breath while you play without stopping playing. Those were the 4 most helpful things. After that I went into his archives and found some comparatively simple songs I wanted to learn that I could hear in my head. To be able to hear them in your head is very helpful because then you know if you’ve made a mistake or not. I picked up “Oh Sussana” “Clementine” “Shannendoa” and “Moon River” right away… I am busy too. I can’t wait until I have time to systematically go through JP’S lessons. When I do I KNOW I will be a very good Harmonica player!!

  I thought that I’d share this with you. Earlier this year I went on a Grade 6 school camp an boldly put my harp in my trouser pocket. One evening, to the surprise of the kids I took it out and knocked out a few tunes and they all sang along. It was a great hit and they saw a side of me that they had no idea existed – I usually have to discipline them. It opened up new channels. A number of them asked me some technical questions (like drawing and blowing to play notes) so that engenderd a fair amount of interest in the instrument. Cheers & happy holidays. Geoff

  Hi Jp,
  My name is jake, I am 11 years old and I just picked up my harmonica a few days ago. I found your website and watched a few of your videos. I do not know any hand technique but I found i can play ok without it. But I am having a little bit of trouble trying to play this. Are you supposed to feel the holes with your tongue? If your not supposed to that, how can you tell when you are bleeding notes? Thanks, Jake

  I’m so happy you found my website. You’re 11 years old and way ahead of the game, if you keep at it you’ll be amazing by the time you’re a teenager. For single notes and rhythm I teach a method I call the deep relaxed mouth position, or lip block which is different than tongue blocking.
