The truth is I love living in Hawaii so much I don’t like to leave very often. But I know I may never get a chance to meet you in person if I don’t come to the mainland.
As with the Hawaiian Harmonica Retreats, I’ve chosen to keep this retreat small and intimate because I want to give you plenty of personalized attention.
What can you expect from a Harmonica Retreat in the Poconos?
1. A musical harmonica vacation that you will remember for the rest of your life… a time for resting, relaxing and basking in the beauty of the Poconos… and playing a whole lot of harmonica!
2. It’s a chance for you to receive one-on-one lessons designed to help you fulfill your dreams for the harmonica.
3. It’s an opportunity to have a dang good time with me and other harmonica friends from all over the planet. Harmonica lessons will begin in the afternoon, so it will give us time in the morning to relax or enjoy the beauty of the Poconos.
Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. I have chosen to make this retreat very small and special because I really want to have time to hang out with you as well as focus on your individual harmonica needs. Together, you and I will custom create a training program that’s perfect for you.
What am I going to learn?
The lessons will be custom created to focus on the harmonica skills you want to learn. You will learn how to play solo and jam with other musicians. We will focus on popular harmonica styles in the genres of Blues, Rock, Folk, Country, and Gospel.

Check out some opinions from my past retreat students!

A Short Ride from New York and Philadelphia
Your retreat will be held in the private resort community of Buck Hill Falls, PA. Less than a two-hour commute from New York City or Philadelphia, Buck Hill Falls was founded in 1901, as a Quaker retreat by Charles F. Jenkins.
For more than a century, the community has provided a respite for a sophisticated, educated, and nature-loving crowd. With 4,500 acres of natural forest, streams, and waterfalls, you’ll be able to both hike and harp amidst nature.
Enjoy Long Walks, Golf, Tennis or Swimming?
You won’t be disappointed. Buck Hill boasts a 27-hole Donald Ross golf course, 10 Har-Tru tennis courts, and an Olympic-sized pool. See www.BuckHillFalls.com
Local Shopping and Local Beer
Outside the stone pillars of Buck Hill Falls, you can take in more of the Poconos. Visit Barley Creek Brewing Company in Tannersville to sample local beers or catch some live music. Go outlet shopping at the Crossings. There’s no Hohner store, but you’ll find bargains on all the other name brands, like Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren, and Ann Taylor.
Want Some Glitz?
For those feeling lucky or needing a bit of “glitz,” the Mount Airy Casino www.mountairycasino.com is less than 15 minutes away. Once famous as a honeymoon resort featuring heart-shaped tubs, Mount Airy is about as “Pocono” as it gets.
When is it?
Group classes will be offered from August 21 till August 25, 2012.
Check In: Monday, August 20 at 12:00 noon.
Check Out: Any time that’s best for you on Sunday, August 26.
Classes will officially begin August 21st at 2PM so you’ll have plenty of time to relax, meet JP, and get acclimated to the accommodations. There are plenty of wonderful places to get food and supplies within a 10-minute drive of the cottage.
Where will you stay?
Our “cottage” is one of the original homes built in the community. You’ll be staying in a spacious, four-level stone home with six bedrooms and 4.5 baths. It boasts a wrap-around covered porch that looks out into the woods and a dining room big enough to seat 12.
Elegantly decorated, every room in the house is filled with antiques. The beds are lovingly covered with Pennsylvania Dutch quilts.
How good at harmonica do you have to be to attend this retreat?
If you’re an absolute beginner or an advanced harmonica player you’re welcome to come. The instruction will be custom-designed, based on what you most want to learn. We generally have a nice mix of students (some who have only been playing for a few months and others who have been playing for years. Advanced students are welcome to support the beginners if that’s fun for you).
JP, what will you teach me?
I’ll help you identify your next level and then help you get there, without the sweat and tears most teachers put you through — my teaching style is very laid back but super-effective!
If you’ve got a specific technique you want to get down (like bending, or single notes, or over-blowing, harmonica amplification, etc), or if there’s a song you want to learn, or if you want to learn how to jam in a band – or anything – I’ll help you crack the mystery of how you can become a great harmonica player.
By the time you finish this retreat, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by just how much you’ve improved. You also walk away with a clearly custom-designed training program to take home with you.
How long is the daily schedule?
2PM till 8PM, with a dinner break. This reason I love this schedule is that it will give us the entire morning to get out and enjoy the beauty of the Poconos together (if you want, or you can chill out, play harmonica, relax, get a massage and do your own thing — be my guest). On some evenings, we enjoy open jams together.
Eating:
You can stock the fridge with all your favorite foods and you’re welcome to eat anytime. There is a bakery only 5 minutes driving distance from the cottage as well as many wonderful places to dine. All the food and provisions that you may need can be obtained in less than 20 minutes driving (e.g. health foods, “non-health” foods, meds etc…).
Can you share your room with a friend or family member?
Sure! Feel free. There are tons of fun things to do in the Poconos. They will be welcome to sit in during any of the group lessons (as a guest, they will not be able to play harmonica and they will not receive individual lessons but they are welcome to enjoy all the classes and music anytime they want). The cost for bringing an additional family member will only be $475.
BRING A SECOND HARMONICA PLAYER FOR HALF PRICE:
If you are willing to share your bedroom with a friend or family member that wants to do the full harmonica training, you can bring this person for an additional $1,000. Please email me to make arrangements. jp@harmonica.com
What happens when I enroll?
Once you have enrolled, you will be assigned a personal harmonica coach who can answer all your logistical questions.
This event will sell out, so if you’re stoked to come please secure your place promptly.
I want to remind you that because this is such a small and special event, and because I will need to pay for the accommodations in advance, there are no refunds for this event. Thanks in advance for your understanding. If for some reason you can’t make it, you can transfer your enrollment to anyone you want and that person can replace you at the event. I will do my best to help you with that process. If I can find someone to replace you I’ll happily give you a full refund.
Like all my lesson products, I’m offering my 100% Satisfaction Guarantee. So you can be confident knowing that you’ll walk away from this event with harmonica skills and memories that will last a lifetime. If you feel that you haven’t taken your harmonica playing to the next level at the end of the retreat you can have your money back (minus the charge for your room and board.
Email jp@harmonica.com if you need more clarity).
Limited Enrollement offered on first come first serve basis.
Cost: $1,995 for private bedroom. $1,250 for shared room. Includes lessons and lodging.
It will only cost $475 additional if you want to bring a significant other who will not be participating in the harmonica lessons. Work trades may be available for a partial scholarship. A friend or family member that wants to participate in the harmonica classes can come for half price if they are willing to share your room. Email me at jp@harmonica.com if your interested in any of the discount possibilities.
