Hootin’ the Blues on the Harp – Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee Video

maintain

by JP Allen

I hope this video brings some fun to your day.

It’s a 1950s video of my first harmonica idol, Sonny Terry, jamming with Pete Seeger and Brownie McGhee.

AND YES! He is making all those awesome hooting sounds while playing harmonica at the same time. Super Fun!

Please post your comment below if you feel inspired. My intention is to bring happiness into the world through the harmonica and I’d love to know if you either enjoyed or didn’t enjoy this blog.

Warmly,
JP

P.S. I may not respond to all your comments but it does bring me joy to read the posts and watch our community of harmonica players growing and supporting one another. (You can also email me at jp@jpallen.com if you have any suggestions for future posts or just want to connect with me).

J.P. I’ve truly enjoyed the emails you’ve sent. I’ve played the harmonica badly, since I was about 7. Then I didn’t play for years. About a year ago, I bought a MB. I started with You Tube, trying to learn, but needed more structure. I enrolled in Tony Eyers, Harmonica Academy.

I do want to thank you, for your emails.

    Thanks, again,

    Don

J.P. Thanks for the emails you send. They encourage me and keep me in touch. I still play badly but the senior center keeps asking me back. I think the seniors like the simple music and the familiar melodies.

Blessings on you and your family my friend.

On this video to be honest it is very excellent. Words can’t describe it. Also, I enjoyed each video you sent to me to learn new Harmonica tricks, actually I can play a simple song thru Harmonica now. Thank you for helping me to learn Harmonica, I truly appreciate it. And may I suggest that you also create a MySpace account so that I can communicate with you more often. Thanks and God bless!!!

    Hi ya,
hope you are good and sound,
Although I admit I can’t read them all, I like your emails yes, your joy is communicative.
    This video is great too.
A quick word on how music helps me.
I can’t say harmonica especially because I am not a true harpist. I explained briely. I had started to learn diatonic but I lost three of them including a Lee Oskar on the road.
I kept on learning anyway on a bad harmonica till I turned to chromatics. I was given an old one but I never knew how it worked.
I understood the advantage they had for someone with no musical education or ear such as me. On diatonics I could never know if I hit the right note and I felt guilt for others ears…
I am still learning how to play the better chromatic I got myself, everyday simply going up, down and around the musical alphabet which is the chromatic scale.
    That’s all I do.
After two months of this, I started singing.
I started singing! Never could I do this in my little 34 years of life. And in tune.
Being able to sing feel like being born, man!
I love it and it is changing me, my perception of Life and my relation to People and the World around.
I am a HAPPY person. I can feel and give happiness.

Here is why playing Music is indispensable.
    No Music No Life!
Harmonica is a wonderful handy instrument to learn on and grow as a human being.

    ;)

    Take good care
    Ciao

    Ludo.

PS: Many thanks to your great work and videos because I started to learn diatonics with you.

Thank you for this Sonny Terry video and all your others to date. It was a joy to watch the pleasure that Sonny Terry got from his playing. I’ve been much more into the chromatic harmonica, playing with the Long Island Harmonica Band what we would call “golden oldie” tunes from the 30′s to the early 50′s, but I also love hearing the blues on the harmonica and would like to improve my abilities in that area. Thanks again.

    Dear JP,

I had the good fortune of seeing Sonny and Brownie live in Manhattan in the 60′s. It was just as on this video. All that stuff with his hands makes it seem as though he is making the air around him do all that stuff that I now know is all happening inside his mouth. What an entertainer!! Sure wish I could do that train stuff so fast and easy. Also loved the Buddy Greene at Carnegie Hall video. It makes everybody I show it to laugh out loud and shake their head in amazement. Keep ‘em coming. Molly

Sonny Terry is one fine talented musician. The control he has in his breathing technique to be able to play both the harmonica and hoot at the same time is nothing short of miraculous. Gosh! just to see a variety show with the likes of Sonny & Pete would be tremendous. I would love to see the harmonica become a more prevelant instrument. It transmits so many feelings to the soul.

It´s one of the idols of all of us. It brought to the scene the very essence of harp playing, this extreme happiness and naturalness of improvising over a few chords. I already knew the video. Sonny Terry in his best!!!

J.P., I just want to let you know how well I like your instructional videos as they have helped me greatly. I have been playing a little less than two years and had a mental block for a while because I was trying to much without learning basics. You helped me with that and a couple of weeks ago I actually played on stage at church! I went to practice, not at all expecting to actually get to play during service the next day but the band members liked it so much they insisted I play at the church service. And check this out, after service everyone listening said my harmonica playing was one of their favorite parts of the service. Thank you for sharing your knowlege!

Sonny’s great….always enjoyed his licks. I encourage everyone to see their favorite harp players before they leave us. I’ve seen my favorite, John Mayall, several times….as well as Charlie Musselwhite and Lee Oskar. I consider it a blessing to have been in their presence.

Well, Sonny T. could be classified as the epitomy of Harmonica Soul. However, I do feel he would sound a lot better & more professional if he backed off on the hooting while he is playing. Just the overview from an ooooooLD player from 65 years back.

And yes I really enjoy your e-mails……keeps me thinking…..keeps me thinking young………again.

Kind regards from an old pro….

    JP,

Thank you. I used to play my dobro with a group of people that included an 80 year old retired preacher who did a very similar song with the verbal accents. I have always been fascinated by the harmonica. Please continue to share your knowlege and music. I try to practice my harp skills more regularly now.

    JP,
Getting emails from you everyday helps keep me fired up and practicing. A friend loaned me your complete disc course and I have really enjoyed it. Your teaching method is so enthusiastic and clear. I’ve been able to learn in leaps and bounds. And have LOTS of fun. As a marriage and family counselor devoted to helping people create positive lives, I especially appreciate your carefully worded messages of encouragement and reassurance. Thank you so much for helping to bring a new source of joy into my life.
P.S. Can you recommend any venues in Austin for hearing great harp playing?

Thank you for your appreciation Sandy, it gives me great joy to share music with people. My languaging is influenced by Marshall Rosenberg who models NVC. I’ve been living in Kauai for almost a decade so I’m a bit out of the Austin scene…If you can find Michael Rubin, Jimi Lee or Guy Forsyth…some of the worlds finest harmonica players… these guys are super cool, and could probably steer you to the best place to find more great harmonica players and Austin venues.

    Hi JP
That was great, I really got a feel for how passionate Sonny was about the harp. Passionate yet relaxed and looked like he was having fun, that’s something I’m noticing all the great harp players ( yourself included ) seem to be having a great time, they don’t play harp they party.
I look forward to the day when I can do that, keep the videos coming they are a real inspiration and they show exactly what we can achieve with practice, and a lot of what you teach can be seen by the greats

I still have my old LPs of Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry, and lots by Pete Seeger as well, so, yes, I enjoyed this email very much and the free lessons as well, which were extremely helpful. Your not-free lessons are beyond what I can afford, but I’m sure they are worth every penny. Thanks for all the help and entertainment you provide.

    Hi JP
I am about half way through your lessons and get discouraged sometimes that I am not where I want to be and about that time I get another e-mail with a video like this and I am on fire to learn. Thanks JP for helping so many like me. I live near Kansas City, MO. and don’t know where I would go to hear a good harpist.
