Cool beans, John D!
JP's been talking a while now about some new Gypsy music thing he was working on.
Just thought it was just going to be an email and/or video link on his webpage. Didn't know it's a whole package dvd!
I can't wait to acquire a copy of it myself, so I can start adding more to my repertoire on my own Lee Oskar Am.
Thanks for the info!

Very nice JD,
Your playing sounded cool makes me want to order that gyspy harmonica dvd, I'm pretty sure that didn't come with the JP's 11 dvd and cd bundle. Is it real hard to learn doesn't appear so. I've been playing a couple years now. Think I can handle.
Harp on!!

Hey! I'm part gypsey Those of you who have used JP's DVDs before, how are they? I might be intersted in this package, but not if his teaching method relies to heavily on tablature.

Well Whiskat, It got me going about a year and 1/2 ago, without that big bundle I would probably be lost where I am learning today. Some prettty tricky and fast moving bluegrass tunes like Billy in the low ground. Big Sciota is another fast moving tune that I was able to learn. So I'm definitely glad I purchased Harp on!!

Hey Whiskat (formerly known as God)!
JP doesn't rely on tabulature; he relies on watching and following along. You take everything at your own pace.
He has so much stuff packed into every dvd, it'll take you weeks, months, maybe even longer to get through! He practically gives the 'store' away! Know what I mean?
That's why I say for me, for a one-time only investment, and you don't even have to pay all at once - This is one of the best home harmonica course ever!
The package deal itself comes with many bonuses like song books etc.
And there's plenty of other supplemental materials to back up each and every lesson.
Again, JP did an excellent job on everything. He really is a great fun teacher, and all around good guy too!
And now that we have the forum going - to be able to discuss his lessons and virtually anybody's/everybody's in the harmonica universe - Well JP Allen has come full circle!
Great things are in store for this place....Oops, I have to be on the Q.T. hush-hush about that! hehehehe!
But yet, while it's certainly not required by any means to learn harmonica here or anywhere - Still like Joe and many others say, if all the free vids and lessons get you excited enough, so that you do invest in JP's home harmonica course bundle, you'll never regret it!
Okay, enough of the plugs then.
Have fun!
Thanks for reading!
Keep on harpin'!

Have not as yet reviewed JPs Gypsy Harmonica but saw John D's take ie very nice. I really love the soulful ethnic sound of the harmonic minor tunings. Here a muck about mix of ethnic sounding tunes I recorded using a Lee Oskar Am Harmonic Minor. http://www.box.net/shared/ia7uzp0mya

Man, that sounded cool, David! I almost bought JP's when I first sarted trying to play. But, was learry. Now as time has passed wished I would have. Oh well. Now times are tough and money is alot tighter. Maybe next year I can get my wife to let me have the course for my birthday or something. But until then, I'll keep plugging along!
Hey,Snappy! Does that work? Joe, JJD is just across the water from you. Can you see his house? On a map Long Island looks pretty close to you, Ummm? Maybe you and him could hook up for harmonica talks. Or I thought of this, put an add in the paper for like minded folks in your area. I know for me it was about a year before I ever ran into anyone else that played harmonica. Now they are all over! Let me know what you think, getting ready to leave for my HOOT meeting! Happy Harpin'!

Joe, JJD is just across the water from you. Can you see his house? On a map Long Island looks pretty close to you, I'd have to have a pretty powerfull telescope or a boat to take across long Island it's definitely a trip to get over there. Theres got to be somebody down on the shoreline of Connecticut who plays the harmonica. Oh I just started a guy I should call him and see how he's doing with his Lee Oskar and the book I gave him. Hopefully his wife didn't throw him out yet. Harp ON!!

Hey, Dave! That did sound cool. I like the whole ethnic neighborhood mix you get with the LO Am. Just as I was grooving into it, the clip ended. But it did sound cool! Keep on harpin'!

Thanks Tyson & SPD. Yes the LO Harmonic minors are a fabulous tuning. Hard to make a mistake. I have an Am & Gm both great. Almost anything can be played on them eg even the National Anthem only it makes it sound like a Serbian rendition! I'm constantly seeking ethnic tunes that are more suited.
SPD sorry the clip was short but I was using Windows Recorder which grabs only 60sec bites. I now use Audacity which is better.

Well SPD I read your earlier thread but you referred to the harp as the Lee Oskar Natural Minor. It's actually the Lee Oskar Harmonic Minor.
Lee Oskar also make Natural Minors but they are different again. Good for playing minor key bluesy tunes like Summertime, Wayfaring Stranger, Georgia on My Mind etc. I have some natural minors but I believe the sounds you achieve using different positions on a standard diatonic are better.
The Harmonic Minor however is a horse of a completely different colour. It has an ethnic sound and is incredibly easy to coax music out of.

I stand corrected and you are correct, Sir! I believe the confusion came from when I ordered this thing from MFrs. I asked for the Lee Oskar Am. And the salesgirl had some confusion as to what I meant because she didn't know the Minors from shine-ola either. And I couldn't very well say: Y'know the one I saw on JP Allen's dvd! I just looked at my box: And yes it is a Harmonic Minor in A. (Or Am with the yellowish green label on the box.) So I did get the correct one. Come to think of it, I'm not sure it was exactly specified on the dvd either. I'll have to double-check this; as well go back and redo that post! Thanks again for clearing this up for me! Keep on harpin'!

Actually it is very confusing & a real trap for some to know the differences. Also LO NM & MM are labeled in cross harp so if you go and order a D MM and expect it to sound shrill it won't ie it's actually low like a G in standard diatonic but when played in 1st pos it's key is Em(d). Stop my head is hurting!!! LOs website explains it all plus demos his harps and what they do: http://www.leeoskar.com/harmonicas.html

It's great! I don't know how he does it, but JP Allen just keeps topping himself!
