Hohner Piedmont Blues Harmonica Set of 7 with Case

Review by JP Allen

“The Piedmont Blues is an okay economy beginner harmonica and the case is pretty cool but I’m not sure this is really the best choice for you. You might be better off getting one really great harmonica for close to the same price.

I would only recommend this set of harmonicas to you if:

  • You are buying this set of harmonicas for a kid
  • You’re on a very tight budget and you need the multiple keys to play along with other musicians (if you’re not planning to play along with other musicians right now you can play any song with one harmonica).
  • You only intend to play “folk” style harmonica and simple songs (if you want to play blues, country-blues, or gospel you’d be MUCH better off with a special 20.

If you’re a beginner who is just learning the harmonica I would strongly suggest two other possibilities:

1. Best: My #1 pick is the Hohner Special 20.

2. Economy: If you’re a beginner who would rather get a more economical harmonica like the Piedmont Blues to “test the waters” (i.e. make sure you serious about sticking with harmonica before you invest), you might as well save your money and get the Hohner Blues Band. And that way you can save your money for when you’re ready to buy a better instrument.”

From the Manufacturer:

Hohner’s diatonic harmonicas set the industry standard through their high quality construction, excellent response and unsurpassed tone. Often called “Blues Harps”, they have been a fixture as melody and accompaniment instruments in blues, rock, country, and folk bands, as well as many other styles of music and musical ensembles. Richter tuning and undivided air channels allow for bending and overblowing the reeds, creating the signature wailing sound typical of the harmonica.

Piedmont Blues or East Coast Blues was born in the American Southeast during the 1900s. Out of its diverse influences arose some of Americas most well known blues harmonica players.
