Review by Harmonica Legend Steve Baker

From the Manufacturer

From the Manufacturer: With the Crossover we have expanded the Marine Band series to introduce a new, top-of-the-line professional quality instrument for the discerning player in modern blues, rock, jazz, soul or funk. The revolutionary laminated bamboo comb (patent pending) is completely sealed, making it water repellent and exceptionally stable. In combination with the screw together assembly the Crossover is extremely airtight, with fast, even response and a raspy, powerful sound which is exceptionally well suited to amplified playing as well as acoustic styles. The modern compromise tuning is ideal for single note playing in different positions in contemporary blues, rock, jazz, soul, funk, while still ensuring a full chord sound, making the Crossover an optimal addition to the great Marine Band range.

I am looking for a tiny harmonica, about 1 1/2″ long. I have one but it is worn out. Do you still make them, and what do they cost?

Played mainly Lee Oskars or most of 33 years, in the past 7 or so years, I leaned toward marine bands and the special 20 as the quality had improved from my beginning harmonica playing years. I have tried several different brands in the past few years including Bushman, Seydel, Suzuki but for me, nothing beats a Hohner Crossover for an out of the box harp…they are responsive, bright, great volume. I am learning to overflow for the first time ever which is possible on the crossover with little to no tweaking. From here forward, my other harps are being phased out to novelty status. I am investing in a set of Custom harps from Richard Sleigh for serious gigs, and Hohner Crossovers will be my workhorse harps for jams and practice. My experience with these harps has been wonderful, and they last twice as long or more than any Lee Oskar I have played — Maybe because I don’t have to work hard to get response which opens up a whole new world for me to focus on my composition rather than focusing on getting my harps to respond the way I want them to. Crossovers play and respond with ease…. great Harp. Hope Hohner maintains and improves on the concept of this harp and its quality, it is worth every penny…
